Women of Legal Tech: Nicole Bradick

Nicole Bradick, CEO at Theory and Principle, has a double header at Legaltech news this month: Bradick is featured in my Women of Legal Tech series  — and she also has been chosen as one of the “18 Millennials Changing the Face of Legal Tech,” by Gabrielle Orum Hernández.  (By the way, check out Hernández’s “5 New Legal Tech Companies Y-Combinator Thinks You Should Know About.”)

“Theory and Principle is a software design and development shop focused on the legal industry, explaines Bradick in “Women of Legal Tech: Nicole Bradick Says, ‘If You Have a Personality, Let It Fly.”

“We work with clients globally to build web and mobile apps. For example, we may work with a foundation that cares about social justice issues, and wants an app to help people understand their legal rights. Or a large law firm that wants to build an application they can offer to clients as a value-add service. We also work with clients with existing digital products to help them improve the user experience and interface.”

CODEX EXTRAS

Here are five bonus questions exclusive to CodeX.

1. Managing up: I don’t believe in managing up. Our team works collaboratively to help our clients meet their goals. Every team member on a project has equal say and responsibility to provide excellent client service. With a small company with a strong team, managing up isn’t an issue. I don’t do well being managed, and if you’re the same, you just may be an entrepreneur.

2. Most important mentor: Jane Browning. She was the Executive Director of The President’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities in Washington, D.C. I worked a there when I was in high school. She took me under her wing and followed my career — we still keeps in touch. She taught me about being comfortable in the discomfort of being a woman with a big personality in a stuffy male-dominated professional world.

3. Dress codes: I hate discussing dress codes for women. We have much more important things to talk about. I dress however the hell I want, and I recognize there are times when a situation calls for certain decorum.

4. On the masthead: Advisory Board for Paladin, an incredible platform that helps organizations streamline and manage their pro bono efforts.

5. At the podium: I speak frequently. Some notable and/or recent presentations include:
• American Bar Association’s ABA Techshow, abouself-help technologies.
• Legal Services Corporation’s annual technology conference about accessible technology and building better legal tech products.
• Mexican Supreme Court about using technology for access to justice,.
• South by Southwest about “Artificial Intelligence in the Law.”
