SLS Vis Team Excels at International Arbitration Moot Competition

Congrats to the SLS Vis Moot team for making it to the top 32 out of 298 teams worldwide at the William C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Competition in Vienna, Austria. This marks the first time any SLS team has advanced to the Round of 32 in this competition. The team includes Kimberly Larkin, JD ’16, Lisa Li, JD ’15, Kori Lorick, JD ’15, and Ted (Theodore) Karch JD ’16. Gaëlle Tribié, JD ’15, was the team’s coach, and Michael Frenkel, JD ’15, assisted with the brief writing portion of the competition.

SLS Jessup Team Wins Regional Public International Law Moot, Advances to International Competition

The Stanford Law School Jessup team, made up of Cassandra Kildow, JD ’16, John Kenney, JD ’16, Vivek Tata, JD ’16, Giulia Scelzo, JD ’16, Mengyi Xu, JD ’17, Desley Horton, LLM ’15, and Udit Sood, LM’15, qualified for the international rounds of the Phillip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition after their victory at the Rocky Mountain Regional Round held at the Sturm College of Law at the University of Denver on February 19-22. They will serve as one of 12 teams to represent the United States at the international round  in Washington, DC on April 5-11, 2015. This marks the first time an SLS team has made it to the international round.

SLS Students Attend Salzburg Cutler Global Law Forum

On February 20 and 21, SLS students and Salzburg Global Cutler fellows Brendan Ballou JD ’16, Johann Barcena LLM ’15, Chris Edelman JD ’15, David Hausman JD/PhD ’15, and Kimberly Larkin JD ’16 along with Professor Jenny Martinez traveled to Washington, DC for the Salzburg Cutler Global Law Forum.

This Forum convenes up to 50 students nominated by leading law schools to receive career advice and explore cutting-edge issues in international law, including international human rights and humanitarian law; international courts; rule of law; and international finances, monetary, and trade law. While there, SLS Cutler Fellows presented working papers on topics including international trade regulation, transnational corporate accountability, and implementation of international law and policy to leading practitioners and scholars. They also attended presentations by John Bellinger, former US State Department Legal Advisor, and Justice Richard Goldstone of the South African Constitutional Court and the International Criminal Tribunals for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia.

SLS Students Attend ILSA International Law Weekend

On November 17 and 18, 2014, SLS students Chris Edelman JD ’15, Viveca Fallenius LLM ’15, Kimberly Larkin JD ’16, and Ryan McIlroy JD ’16 attended the International Law Society in America’s International Law Weekend in New York City. The conference’s theme was “International Law in a Time of Chaos.”  Students attended panels and keynote speeches on this theme by leading international legal practitioners and scholars including Stephane Cartier, Legal Officer at the United Nations, Benjamin Ferencz, former prosecutor at the Nuremberg International Military Tribunal, and Donald Donovan, leading arbitration partner at Debevoise and Plimpton, as well as Stanford’s own Beth Van Schaack and Stephen Sonnenberg. They also networked with students and professionals focused on international law.
