Overview

Interview Assignment Process

Interviews are allocated to students by computer lottery. Assignments are based on student preferences and availability. The majority of students receive the interviews they request. When an employer’s schedule is oversubscribed, the resumes of students on the overflow list are made available to the employer online along with those students who have been granted interviews. For Resume Collect employers, student bids are placed with no order of preference.

Submitting Interviewer Names

All OCI employers are asked to submit the name/s of their interviewer/s as soon as possible (unless you included it in your initial registration). If you’ve not yet submitted this information, please email Kyle Costello or call our office at (650) 723-3924 as soon as possible. We ask that you also indicate whether or not the interviewer is an alumnus/a of Stanford Law School, and if so, in what year that person graduated. Should there be a last minute change in interviewer, please let us know as soon as possible so that we may update schedules in both Symplicity and Flo Recruit.

Accessing Your Interview Schedule & Student Resumes

OCI and Resume Collect employers will receive an email once their resume packet and/or schedule is available to view in Symplicity. Note: all communications relating our recruiting programs will be sent to the email address of the contact who originally requested a schedule.

Requests for Writing Samples and Other Materials

For OCI: Resumes will be released to you on-line through Symplicity; for details on transcripts and ancillary materials, to be provided using Flo Recruit. please refer to page 4 of our SLS Recruiting Policies.

For Resume Collection: If employers wish to request additional materials beyond a resume and cover letter, they should do so by directly contacting the student after reviewing their resume. This includes transcripts.

OCI Schedule Changes Made by Students

If a student cancels an interview, we will populate that spot with a student from the waitlist (should you have one). For this reason, your schedule may look different from the time we initially release it to you, up until the interview date itself. All changes will generate a follow-up “digest” email through Flo Recruit, to be sent to the interviewer.

Schedule Changes Made by Employers

Use of Flo Recruit enables us to monitor the interviews in real-time, to ensure that the process is running smoothly for both our students and your interviewers. In order to do this, we need to know of all changes, to the extent possible.
If you need to deviate from the schedule in any way (including extending your schedule, or end the interviewing early) please e-mail Kyle Costello or call our office at (650) 723-3924 right away.

Contacting Students

We encourage students on your overflow list, who were unable to secure an interview with you during OCI, to reach out to you in the hopes of arranging a screening interview, either during your OCI day, or at another time. We hope that you will view their outreach as indicative of a strong interest in you, and will try to accommodate them. Also, you may feel free to reach out to them as well, to the extent that you are interested.

Funding for Public Interest and Government Positions

Public interest and government employers who expect students to secure all or part of their summer funding from external sources should make this clear to all interviewees.

Public Relations Interviewing

Occasionally, employers have interviewed first-year students to market their organization without having any real intention to hire 1Ls. Should this be the case for you, we ask that you do not participate but instead email us materials to distribute to our students. Students interview with the belief that positions are available and are, understandably, upset when they discover otherwise. Such “public relations” interviewing often does more harm than good to an employer’s reputation.

Day of Interviews

In the week prior to the start of January OCI, the recruiting contact who initially submitted the OCI registration will receive a “digest email” containing your interview schedule as it appears in Flo Recruit, along with a link, unique to your interviewer(s), to access your SLS interview room for the duration of the interviews. This email will be sent to you and you will need to forward it to your attorneys. Should there be any changes made from the time that email is sent and the start of your interviews, you will receive a follow-up email clearly marked as an UPDATE.

Attorneys:

– If you have not yet provided your interviewer names to us, please do so as soon as possible. Please indicate if they are an alum of Stanford Law and if so, their grad year.
– If you have specific interviewers who will be interviewing specific candidates at particular times, you may send this information to us in an email and though we may be unable to designate the time slots in Symplicity, we can make adjustments in Flo Recruit.
– Please ensure that your attorneys are familiar with the Flo Recruit platform. All Flo tutorials and materials may be found here. This includes interviewer training, the downloading of candidate documents, and troubleshooting connectivity problems.
– Please also let us know immediately (ocs@law.stanford.edu) if you have a last-minute interviewer. We will change the name manually in Flo Recruit.

* To the extent that your interviewers are comfortable, we ask that you provide to us their mobile phone numbers. This will be for our internal use, and will only be used in the event of an emergency or if there is a connectivity issue when a text might be the most expeditious way to reach them. If you have already provided your interviewer names in Symplicity, you may send an email to ocs@law.stanford.edu with the phone numbers of your interviewers listed. If you’ve not yet provided us with the names, you may email everything at once.

After Your Interviews

Following Up

Effective follow-up to your Stanford Law School recruiting visit is important. We have found that law students often measure a potential employer’s interest by the quality and timeliness of the follow-up procedures. At the conclusion of each interview, inform the student of the approximate date to expect your response and of subsequent steps to be taken by students who are selected.

Callbacks

Employers are free to extend callback invitations immediately following their OCI date, though students and employers must limit interviews (including transportation to and from interviews) to the period outside of scheduled classes. Regarding the decision to hold callback interviews either in-person or virtually, we ask that you act in accordance with COVID health guidelines at that time, and make our students health and health privacy concerns your utmost priority. Students will be expected to comply with all travel guidelines in effect from Stanford University, Stanford Law School, as well as local and county officials. We will keep our employers abreast of current guidelines when necessary.

Should you choose to invite a student to visit your office, please inform the student whether they should make the travel arrangements, or whether your office will take care of them. Please indicate how expenses will be covered and whether or not you will require them to submit a NALP Travel Reimbursement Form. We encourage students to combine several employer visits to save them time and to allow employers to share costs.

To avoid misunderstandings, please send a letter confirming any arrangements made in your telephone conversations with students. Also, if you agree that the student is to make the travel arrangements with reimbursement from you, they can use the original of the confirmation letter to make travel arrangements on credit with a local travel agency (they are responsible for either obtaining payment from you to pay the travel agency or paying the agency directly and must do so within 30 days). As you might guess, students appreciate rapid reimbursement, as delay may cause them financial hardship.
