Biography
Mary-Anne Williams is a leading expert in artificial intelligence, focusing on the crucial areas of reasoning, decision making, human-AI alignment, AI safety, AI innovation,
strategy, management and governance. Since 2009 as a CodeX Fellow and now Affiliate at Stanford Law School, she brings her extensive knowledge to the intersection of AI and legal innovation. Professor Williams holds the Michael J Crouch Chair for Innovation in the Business School at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) and is recognized as a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). Her research explores the design of AI agents that align with human values, expectations and preferences, fostering safe and effective collaboration between humans and AI systems, and ensuring the safe and responsible development of trustworthy human-centred AI innovation. With a PhD in Artificial Intelligence and a Master of Laws (LL.M.), Professor Williams offers a unique perspective on the ethical and legal challenges presented by AI. Her leadership of several research labs, work in entrepreneurship and teaching of corporate innovation in the Australian Graduate School of Management further demonstrate her commitment to advancing responsible management and governance of AI innovation.
