2022 Global Quarter Field Study: Europe

Field Study

Following the on-campus coursework, faculty and Franke Fellows traveled to London, Geneva, Berlin, and Frankfurt for a total of 3 weeks. SLS students and faculty interacted with foreign law students and academics, and engaged in simulations and negotiations over international business and investment. In addition, Franke Fellows consulted with regulators, lawyers, and business leaders at multinational firms to learn the professional skills required to face the legal, business and cultural challenges arising in global business transactions.

Franke Fellows received at least 14 units of credit for the quarter: 9 units for classes on SLS campus and 5 units for the field study.

The field study ended in early June, in time for 3L’s to attend SLS graduation.

Franke Fellows Reflect on Their Experience

Franke Fellows during the Global Quarter

“Law school taught me to think like a lawyer, but Global Quarter taught me to think like a legal professional. From brilliant scholars and now life-long friends, I learned what it takes to build an international career and tackle international legal and business problems.”

Michael Doman, JD ’22
Judicial Law Clerk, United States Court of Appeals, Eleventh Circuit

“Global Quarter was easily the most academically rewarding experience of my law school career.”

Albert Park, JD ’22
Law Clerk, Davis Polk

“The Global Quarter was the capstone of my three years at Stanford Law School. The overseas component was the trip of a lifetime and provided a unique opportunity to engage with a diverse spectrum of scholars and practitioners in Geneva, London, Oxford, Berlin, and Frankfurt. I am grateful to have been a part of the program and it has, without a doubt, prepared me to be a better lawyer, thinker, and citizen.”

Daniel Khalessi, JD ’22
Associate, Latham & Watkins

“Each general counsel we spoke to during Global Quarter offered a fascinating window into the calculus an attorney makes when unbound from the hierarchies of law firms and how they choose to operate as moral actors where legality is gray and fundamental values clash.”

Jackie Schaeffer, JD ’23
