This form is designed to help you assess your progress toward your JD degree. Use your transcript (available via Axess) and the list of the courses that fulfill specific graduation requirements to determine the requirements you have successfully completed. You can continue to update this form as you complete additional requirements. A complete description of the requirements for the J.D. degree is outlined in the Student Handbook. The requirements listed below are for JD students entering in the fall of 2019 and thereafter.

1. Unit Requirement

JD students must successfully complete all first-year required courses plus an additional 78 quarter units of elective coursework (a combined total of 111 quarter units).

• In accordance with ABA accreditation standards, JD students may not count toward the JD graduation requirement more than thirty-one (31) quarter units of the following types of coursework: externship, directed research, directed writing, senior thesis, research track, courses taken outside the Law School, moot court (Kirkwood competition), Trial Lawyer Skills Workshop, and Law Journal Discussion Group.

2. Residency Requirement

To graduate, a JD student must be “in residence” as a law student for at least nine quarters and no more than eleven quarters. More time may be granted only to accommodate a documented disability. For purposes of the JD degree, the term “in residence” means that a student:

1. Takes at least 9 quarter units of credit each quarter that can be counted toward your JD;
2. By the date all grades for the quarter are due, passes at least 8 such units each quarter;
3. Pays full tuition to the law school; and,
4. Does not work more than 20 hours per week during the term.

A student must be in residence during the quarter in which the final degree is conferred or during the quarter immediately preceding degree conferral.

3. Required Curriculum

To help you track the graduation requirements b, c & d below, see Graduation Requirements filter in the SLS Course Catalog. A course must be successfully completed in the term and year the graduation requirement is listed for the graduation requirement to be met.

a. First-year Required Courses

Each J.D. student is required to complete Civil Procedure, Contracts, Criminal Law, Torts, Constitutional Law, Property, 1L Discussion seminar, Legal Research and Writing (LRW), and two terms of Federal Litigation (1L) during their first year at the Law School.

b. Ethics Requirement

JD students must complete at least one advanced course that contains one or more units of ethics instruction.

c. Writing Requirement

In addition to first-year LRW and Federal Litigation, each JD student must complete one course of at least two units each in which a principal part of the assigned work is paper or other written product. The course must be designated as “R” (Research).

d. Experiential Learning Requirement

J.D. students must complete 8 units of coursework designated as fulfilling the Experiential Learning (EL) requirement.

Pathway A— Full-time Clinic:

Students who complete any of Stanford Law School’s full-time clinics are deemed “Pathway A” students. These students will automatically satisfy the ABA Experiential Learning Requirement.

Pathway B— Self-Design:

Students who do not enroll in one of Stanford Law School’s full-time clinics are deemed “Pathway B” students. Pathway B students must submit to the Registrar’s office a Self-Design Plan specifying which courses the student has taken or intends to take to satisfy the ABA Experiential Learning requirement. All students who elect Pathway B must include a Professional Writing (“PW”) course within their individually tailored plan.
