We are pleased to announce a three-part program entitled “How to Start and Build a Successful Firm.” This series, featuring nationally renowned trial attorney Shanin Specter, who’s also taught at SLS for the past four years, is a unique opportunity for Stanford students interested in learning about the business behind the operation of a law firm from the very best. Specifically, the series will focus on the nuts and bolts of starting your own firm and building a vibrant practice. Here are the details:

How to put yourself in a position starting today to go out on your own? What kind of experience do you need first? How to pick clients and cases, both individually (is this claim a winner?) and collectively (how does this case fit in with the other cases I’m handling?)

How to get the best cases and clients (referrals, advertising, reputation, etc)?

How to grow the firm, building a staff and recruiting legal talent?

How to pick or not pick a partner?

How to manage the finances of the firm (lines of credit, litigation finance, etc)

How to work with other firms and build a successful practice?

This seminar is equally applicable whether you intend on a litigation, corporate, immigration, employment or any type of practice or firm you desire to lead and build.

Who: Shanin Specter has helped build Kline & Specter into what the New York Times referred to as a “powerhouse law firm.” His firm, based in Philadelphia, has over 40 attorneys and has won billions of dollars in settlements and verdicts.  He has taught “Advanced Torts,” “How to Ask a Question” and “The Civil Justice System as an Agent of Change” at SLS
