How does a 50-years civil war end? In 2016 the Colombian Government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) signed a peace agreement that ended a 50 plus years civil war. El Silencio de los Fusiles, a documentary directed by the award-winning Colombian journalist Natalia Orozco, follows the four years of secret and public negotiations that culminated with the signature of a peace agreement. The film narrates the intimate and revealing story of the peace process and the obstacles that lie ahead for reconciliation in Colombia. What can 20% of the world’s countries with ongoing civil wars learn from this peace process?
Claret Vargas, Senior Researcher and Area Coordinator at the Center for the Study of Law, Justice, and Society (Dejusticia), an international Global South NGO based in Colombia, will be speaking about these questions after the screening of the documentary.
This event is co-sponsored by the Stanford Human Rights Center.
