Since the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain, and many others, Black Lives Matter has reignited a rallying cry from California to South Korea. The result is, again, a historic racial reckoning concurrent with the Covid-19 pandemic, motivating many Democrats to run on political platforms consistent or supportive of the movement. This event poses the question: What is the role of the Black Lives Matter movement in elections up and down the ballot? Why has it become politicized despite 93% of its protests being non-violent? How can progressives find excitement and identity in a party that does not yet seem to be fully invested in even thinking about wholesale criminal justice transformation?
