Visit to San Mateo Sheriff’s Department at Maple Street Jail in Redwood City with Professor Joan Petersilia

In 2015-16, the Stanford Criminal Justice Center (SCJC) launched a new series called “Inside Justice” to give small groups of law students the opportunity to experience various aspects of and processes that comprise our criminal justice system. These opportunities will include police ride-alongs; visits to local jails, state prisons, and juvenile detention facilities; and attendance at specialty courts, criminal sentencing proceedings, appellate hearings, and lifer parole hearings. For each trip, an individual faculty member will suggest background readings, lead the visit, and debrief with the group of students afterward. Two visits will be scheduled each of the three quarters. Stanford Law School students may sign up for no more than one visit per quarter and should be mindful of their class schedules so as not to conflict with class time. Academic credit is not available.
