Hate Crimes in the Heartland is an award winning documentary film project by Emmy Award winner Rachel Lyon. Heartland tells powerful stories of people involved in two hate crimes – over 90 years apart in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The 1921 Tulsa race riots and the 2012 Good Friday shootings depicted in the film reveal how racial animosity defines much of modern American culture. The film explores current and past hate crimes in our nation, asking important questions related to social justice and our individual responsibility, along with an exploration of the media’s impact on the justice system.
