Artificial intelligence is reshaping how law firms, legal departments, companies, public institutions, and other organizations operate.

The Stanford Legal Engineering Academy prepares a select group of leaders to guide their organizations through this shift.

Participants will build the technical understanding, strategic perspective, and practical skills needed to act as chief AI leaders within their organizations, whether or not they hold that formal title. They will learn to:

  • Develop and execute an organizational AI strategy
  • Redesign teams, workflows, and services around AI
  • Lead adoption and organizational change
  • Build effective governance and risk frameworks
  • Work directly with current AI models and tools to build and prototype real solutions

What is legal engineering?

Legal engineering is one of the fastest growing areas of hiring and investment across the legal and technology sectors, yet it remains an evolving field.

At its core, legal engineering sits at the intersection of law, technology, operations, organizational design, product thinking, and governance. It focuses on how legal and business work gets done and how those systems can be redesigned for a world shaped by AI.

Legal engineers do more than advise organizations about artificial intelligence. They help determine how organizations will use it, govern it, and adapt around it. They design the systems, teams, processes, and institutional structures that make that change possible.

This program is designed for professionals who want to help define this emerging field. Participants will play a role in shaping how legal engineering develops across industries and institutions.

An immersive Stanford experience

The Academy will bring a limited, application-based cohort to Stanford University for an intensive residential experience.

The program includes daily instruction from Stanford faculty and leading practitioners, collaborative working sessions, structured networking opportunities, guided exercises, case studies and hands-on work. Participants will also have access to select Stanford campus resources and events during the program period.

Participants should bring substantial professional experience, a strong interest in AI and organizational change, and an opportunity to apply what they learn within an organization, team, or new venture.

Technical or coding experience is not required.

Following the completion of the program and the design of a  capstone project, participants will receive a Certificate of Achievement from Stanford Law School.

The program is designed for experienced professionals positioned to lead meaningful organizational change, including:

  • Law firm partners and innovation leaders
  • General counsel and senior in-house attorneys
  • Legal operations and legal technology leaders
  • Business executives and organizational leaders
  • Government, regulatory, and public interest professionals
  • Professionals building new AI-enabled teams, services, or organizations

Founding Advisory Board

The curriculum is being developed in collaboration with a founding advisory board of leaders from artificial intelligence companies, law firms, legal departments, civil society, academia, executive search, and the legal technology ecosystem.

Additional advisory board members and program faculty will be announced as the curriculum develops.
