Garreth researches issues at the intersection of immigration law, family law, and constitutional law. He is particularly interested in studying how children and LGBTQ+ families interact with the immigration system. Part of Garreth’s work involves empirical studies of immigration-law enforcement in the United States. His scholarship has been published in the Arizona State Law Journal, the UCLA Journal of Gender & Law, and the Berkeley Technology Law Journal.

Prior to joining Stanford Law School, Garreth was an associate at Morrison & Foerster LLP in San Francisco. As part of his pro bono practice, Garreth represented clients applying for asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), and U visas. He also participated in numerous adjustment-of-status, employment-authorization, and naturalization clinics.

Garreth graduated from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif and awarded the Thelen Marrin Prize for Law Journal Writing. While in law school, Garreth worked as a clinical student in the East Bay Community Law Center’s Immigration Clinic, primarily assisting child migrants and their families.

Garreth holds undergraduate and doctoral degrees from the University of Oxford. He is fluent in Spanish.
