Biography
Irene Liu is the Executive Director of the Stanford Law School AI Initiative, which serves as a hub for the law school’s interdisciplinary work in artificial intelligence. Liu brings experience across academia, government, and technology to guide the Initiative’s work in teaching, training, research, partnerships, and public engagement in artificial intelligence.
Prior to joining Stanford Law, she served as an AI advisor to the California Senate and as an advisor to UC Berkeley School of Law’s AI Institute, where she also taught on emerging topics in generative AI. She is the founder and CEO of Hypergrowth GC, where she advises technology CEOs and executive teams on strategic and legal decisions to support company growth. Through these and other roles, Liu has long focused on the governance, business, and policy implications of technology, with an emphasis on responsible AI development and deployment.
Liu has held a number of senior leadership roles at technology companies. She was the Chief Financial and Legal Officer of Hopin, where she oversaw legal, finance, policy, and trust and safety functions during a period of rapid global expansion. She also served as General Counsel and Senior Vice President at Checkr, where she led legal, compliance, policy, and customer education teams and advised on corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and company growth. She led global law enforcement compliance at BlackBerry and held senior legal roles at Lookout, an enterprise mobile security company, where she worked on international privacy, security, and regulatory compliance issues.
Before entering the private sector, Liu served as a trial attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division and the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.
Her work has been recognized with honors including General Counsel of the Year by Corporate Counsel, Top 50 Women Lawyer by the National Diversity and Leadership Conference, and In-House Leader by the Los Angeles Times. She has spoken at academic institutions, government hearings, and industry conferences, including Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Next Gen Conference, the Federal Reserve, and a Federal Trade Commission public hearing on artificial intelligence.
She has hosted the Hypergrowth GC video series on Luminate+ and “Coffee Break with Irene” on Berkeley Boost. She also served as a foundational advisor to Women Defining AI.
Liu received her J.D. from UC Berkeley School of Law and her B.A. from Mount Holyoke College.
