Jonathan Schwartz

Biography
Jonathan Schwartz is General Counsel of the Brookings Institution, where he oversees the institution’s legal affairs and advises its Board of Trustees, senior leadership, and scholars on a wide range of legal, policy, reputational, and organizational matters.
Over the course of his career, Schwartz has served as general counsel to several leading companies across technology, media, and financial services, including Napster, Cablevision Systems, JPMorgan Chase’s Investment Bank, and Univision Communications. In these roles, he led legal, government affairs, and corporate functions, advising on complex regulatory, governance, and strategic issues.
Earlier in his career, Schwartz served in senior roles at the U.S. Department of Justice and as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. He also clerked for Judge Harry T. Edwards on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and for Justice Thurgood Marshall on the U.S. Supreme Court.
Schwartz currently serves on multiple boards, teaches at Yale Law School, and advises senior executives and in-house legal leaders on corporate governance, risk, and organizational strategy. He holds a B.S. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania, a J.D. from Stanford Law School, and an M.Phil. in International Relations from the University of Cambridge, where he was a Fulbright Scholar.
