<p style="font-weight: 400"LEAP (Legal Education for Adolescents Project) partners with Fresh Lifelines for Youth (FLY). We aim to deliver impactful legal rights education to youth in our community. Our purpose is to foster legal awareness and provide mentorship. Our goal is to demystify the legal system while teaching basic legal rights and key legal concepts to at-risk high schoolers as well as young people who are currently in the juvenile justice system.

Commitment Required of Members:

New members will need to complete background checks in Fall Quarter, but work won’t begin until Winter Quarter (and will continue through about half of the Spring Quarter). You will be visiting a participating location (juvenile hall or a high school nearby) once a week for approximately 2-3 hours (including travel). In winter, there will be three training sessions for new facilitators with FLY, which is the largest time commitment (around 20 hours total). Lessons will be provided for facilitators, and each team will have a member of FLY staff there to manage the site.

During Winter Quarter, members must participate in 12 weekly 1-1.5 hour sessions at community sites. You will teach youth from our community about basic legal rights and related concepts; lessons are provided and FLY staff will teach with you. Volunteers also attend three training sessions on weekends. These will total roughly twenty hours, but should last for all of law school. In the fall, members will: (1) participate in a brief interview with FLY; (2) complete administrative forms; and (3) engage in fingerprinting/background check.
