2018-2019 Topics and Learning Objectives

 

Session 1: How Do We Understand Leadership?

  • Participants will identify and strengthen management and leadership skills
  • Participants will begin to view themselves as leaders
  • Participants will learn how to recognize and address adaptive challenges
  • Participants will gain basic understanding of self-and peer-coaching
  • Participants will create professional development goals

 

Session 2: Nonprofit Legal and Organizational Structures

  • Participants will understand the purpose and responsibility of 501(c)(3) organizations
  • Participants will develop strategies to ensure that an organization’s vision, mission, and values are reflected in organizational structure
  • Participants will understand the role and responsibilities of non-profit executives and board members
  • Participants will examine different internal systems for structuring and distributing authority and power with respect to operations, programs, and resource development
  • Participants will explore the relationship between hierarchy and accountability

 

Session 3: Building Organizational Capacity for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

  • Participants will examine how organizational mission informs internal practices
  • Participants will develop analysis of how organizational policies, practices, training, and culture can reflect organizational values with respect to equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Participants will develop strategies to build internal organizational equity

 

Session 4: Understanding Mission, Developing Vision, and Implementing Strategy

  • Participants will understand how to use change statements, identity statements, and strategy screens to make strategic choices for an organization or program
  • Participants will understand tools for increasing alignment within an organization on strategic direction
  • Participants will examine the relationship between measuring impact and implementing strategy

 

Session 5: Non-Profit Revenue Models/Fundraising/Financial Management

  • Participants will gain basic understanding of non-profit finance concepts
  • Participants will understand how revenue models can engage with organizational mission and shape organizational programs
  • Participants will learn fundraising strategies and begin to build fundraising skills

 

Session 6: Managing Yourself, Managing Others, Managing the Work

  • Participants will learn strategies for using time effectively, staying organized, and exercising authority
  • Participants will learn how to develop staff and hold them accountable
  • Participants will learn how to delegate work, assign meaningful roles, and articulate clear goals with concrete measures of success

 

Session 7: Team Dynamics, Organizing and Running Meetings, Coalition Dynamics

  • Participants will understand the dynamics of group decision-making
  • Participants will develop facilitative behaviors and skills which create an environment that enables a group to identify and solve problems together
  • Participants will learn tools that increase the effectiveness of group meetings

 

Session 8: Strategic Communications – Guest Trainer from The Opportunity Agenda

  • Participants will learn how to develop values-based messages to advance legal and policy reform goals
  • Participants will learn how to target messages to different audiences
  • Participants will learn how to stay on message while engaging with different audiences

 

Session 9: Measuring to Change the World

  • Participants will understand the main challenges to measuring the impact of social justice work
  • Participants will understand the benefits of using evaluation tools to clarify and articulate how social change happens
  • Participants will learn basic evaluation concepts (inputs, activities, outputs, outcomes, impact) and how to apply them to their work

 

Session 10: Your Individual Impact and Sustainability

  • Participants will understand how we can define individual success in ways that support and inform our choices
  • Participants will develop a clearer perspective on how defining our own individual leadership styles can advance our programs, organizations and personal lives
  • Participants will identify next leadership goals and create an individual plan to advance those goals
