SLS Holds Memorial Service in Honor of Those Killed in AUAF Terrorist Attack

On November 3, 2016, the Afghanistan Legal Education Project held a memorial service for Professor Naqib Ahmad Khpulwak and those killed in the terrorist attacks on the American University of Afghanistan (AUAF) in Kabul on August 24, 2016. Professor Khpulwak, a former SLS visiting scholar, taught various subjects at AUAF including Islamic Law. Several of Professor Khpulwak’s friends and colleagues from his time as a visiting fellow at Stanford Law School spoke of his resilience, passion for teaching, and dedication to improving Afghanistan.

Law student, Jamshid Zafar, was also killed in the August 24 terrorist attack. Former AUAF faculty and students remembered Jamshid’s tremendous potential and intellect, unrelenting hope for a peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan, and determination to contribute to that future of possibility.

Students, alumni, and faculty from Stanford Law School and from AUAF also attended the memorial and paid their respects to those remembered. Professor Khpulwak and Jamshid inspired many in the United States and in Afghanistan. They were resolute in the face of adversity and the dangers inherent to teaching and pursuing education in Kabul. Their work and memory will live on in the students and colleagues whose lives they touched.
