Paul Lomio Veterans Legal Assistance Program (VLAP)

Description:

The Paul Lomio Veterans Legal Assistance Program (VLAP) helps provide pro bono legal services to veterans in the Bay Area. We are partnered with Swords to Plowshares, a Bay Area nonprofit dedicated to providing veterans with a variety of services, including legal assistance. Our work focuses on assisting Swords to Plowshares in three different projects. In the fall, we review veteran records to assist with discharge upgrades and VA benefits claims. In the winter, we host a one-day legal clinic to provide veterans with in-person legal services related to discharge upgrades and VA benefits claims. In the spring, we visit a state prison with a high veteran population to provide similar services.

Commitment Required of Members:

Members work generally between 5 and 15 hours per quarter, usually engaging in one training (1 to 2 hours) and one clinic/main event (3 to 10 hours) per quarter, as well as one introductory meeting in the fall (1 hour).
