Paul Lomio Veterans Legal Assistance Program (VLAP)

Description:

The Paul Lomio Veterans Legal Assistance Program (VLAP) helps provide pro bono legal services to veterans in the Bay Area. We are currently partnered with Swords to Plowshares, a Bay Area non-profit dedicated to providing veterans with a wide variety of services, including legal assistance. Our work this year focuses on visiting a state prison with a high veteran population to provide legal services related to discharge upgrades and VA claims in the Fall quarter, hosting a 1-day veteran legal clinic at Stanford to provide similar services in the Winter quarter, and assisting Swords to Plowshares with conducting reviews of veteran records to assist with discharge upgrades and VA claims in the Spring Quarter.

Commitment Required of Members:

For the prison visit (Fall), members will be expected to spend 4-5 hours on the day of the prison visit and 1-2 hours for training prior to the visit. For the campus clinic (Winter), members will be expected to commit a similar number of hours on the day of the campus clinic, 1-2 hours for training prior to the visit, and 2-3 hours for potential client outreach. For the record reviews (Spring), members will be expected to commit 6-8 hours.
