Biography
Rachel E. Stern is Professor of Law and Political Science at Berkeley Law, where she previously held the Pamela P. Fong and Family Distinguished Chair in China Studies. She is the author of Environmental Litigation in China: A Study in Political Ambivalence (Cambridge University Press, 2013), an honorable mention for the Herbert Jacob Book Prize. Her articles on courts, lawyers and judicial transparency in contemporary China and beyond include the award-winning “The Good Lawyer” (with Lawrence Liu). Stern is currently completing a Cambridge Elements book, The Rise and Fall of Judicial Transparency in China with Benjamin L. Liebman, as part of a new stream of work on the global politics of access to legal information.
Before joining Berkeley Law, Stern was a Junior Fellow at the Harvard University Society of Fellows. She has also been a Researcher at the Paris Institute for Advanced Study, a Visiting Scholar at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), and the Law and Society series editor at Cambridge University Press.
