In 20 Days: FutureLaw Conference 2015

A quick introduction: I’m a new fellow with CodeX and am delighted to be a new blogger as well. I retired in February from ALM, where I was editor-in-chief of Law Technology News for 17 years, and at The Recorder for 13 years where I primarily covered the organized bar. I’m a member of the California bar.

Let’s kick off this adventure with a look at the upcoming FutureLaw Conference 2015. It will be held on campus (Paul Brest Hall next to Stanford Law School), on Thursday, April 30, starting at 8:30 a.m. and closing with a 5:30 p.m. reception.

Over the next week or so, I’ll be highlighting the scheduled panels of the jam-packed day. (The conference partner is Thomson Reuters.)

Opening Keynote

First-Ever ‘Legithon’ @ Vermont State House 1
Oliver Goodenough

The opening keynote, “The State of the Art of Legal Technology Circa 2015, will be presented by Professor Oliver Goodenough. He’s the director of the Center for Legal Innovation at the Vermont Law School and a visitor at CodeX and the Office of Financial Research, U.S. Treasury. Additionally, he’s a Faculty Associate at Harvard University’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society, among other affiliations.

Goodenough and Mark Flood of OFR presented a fascinating discussion of “Computational Representation of Financial Agreements,” on March 18, as part of the CodeX Speaker Series. And he was on the opening panel at the standing-room-only CodeX track at Legaltech New York on Feb. 5.

At FutureLaw, he will “provide an overview of the state of the art of legal technology, highlight the various systemic changes confronting the law and legal practice and describe the different technological approaches that the various stakeholders in the legal system have been adopting to respond to these changes,” the program notes.

Said Roland Vogl, Executive Director of CodeX, “We’ve been talking about the advances that technology will bring to our legal system for sometime, and sometimes it’s not clear what is already real and tangible, what’s in the research labs, and what’s still on the ideation level. It’s wonderful to have Professor Oliver Goodenough, one of leading scholars covering the legal tech space, kick-off this year’s FutureLaw conference with a keynote walking us through the state of the art in the field.”

Sounds like a perfect way to start off what is bound to be a very fascinating day!
