Handshake Software  is partnering with legal research company Ravel Law, reports Gabe Friedman at Bloomberg BNA Big Law Business. “Handshake operates as a layer on top of Microsoft’s Sharepoint tool, which many law firms use as a storage device, and allows those users to not only access documents but to also look at their time management software and other tools. Now, users can also click a tab to run Ravel Law,” wrote Friedman. Ravel Law  was founded in 2012 by Stanford Law grads Daniel Lewis and Nicholas Reed. Read more

Avvo is launching a new fixed-fee legal services, Avvo Legal Services, reports Sean Doherty on his Jan. 14 technology column on Above The Law.”Like Avvo Advisor, ALS users pay upfront for access to a lawyer. But rather than ask legal questions over the telephone, the new service offers users a method to select a lawyer willing and able to complete a prescribed legal task,” Doherty notes.

“Lawyers who register for ALS choose their jurisdiction and practice area, be it business, family or immigration law, and select the discrete services they want to offer. Avvo calculates prices and defines the services, such as reviewing a consulting or prenuptial agreement ($149), starting a single-member LLC ($595), or filing an uncontested divorce ($995),” he writes.

The story broke on Above The Law via Kathryn Rubino.  Also: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Advanced Discovery acquired two legal staffing and document review companies, writes Friedman at BBBLB. The company purchased Legal Placements Inc, or LPI, which will retain its brand, he reports.  “Advanced Discovery now has two data centers, one in Washington, D.C. plus a subterranean facility in Kansas. AD also purchased Millnet, a London-based document review and legal staffing services company.
