Last week’s Above The Law Academy for Private Practice had many participants from our CodeX community. Held Oct. 28 & 29, in Philadelphia, the event kicked off at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, starting with a media panel (the do’s and don’ts of dealing with reporters, marketers and social media). Then it was time for the “alt.legal Innovation Awards Company Showcase.”

ATL-APP in progress

The 15 contestants (in seven categories) were selected from 66 applicants. Each presenter had three minutes to pitch to the very enthusiastic audience. (Some of the contestants were participating remotely.) It was a whirlwind of information!

The overall winner was Casetext, (the first in our CodeX series of “Startup Snapshot” profiles.) Presenter: Jake Heller (CodeX Fellow).

Among the other presenters were Hotshot (Ian Nelson); Allegory Law (Alma Asay); Kira (Steve Obensky); eBrevia (Ned Gannon); Alt Legal (Nehal Madhani, CodeX Fellow) and others who have been on the CodeX radar.

Judges were Joe Borstein (Thomson Reuters & ATL alt.legal columnist), Mary Juetten (CEO & Founder of Traklight ), Nicole “Niki” Black, (Legal Technology Evangelist at MyCase) and moi. (We chose the winners in each category and then the overall winner.)
