SLS Covid-19 Discussion Series – New Episodes

Discussions feature the impact of COVID-19 on law schools, the nation’s securities markets, elections and the possibility of immunity certificates.

May 7, 2020 — Stanford Law School published three new discussions hosted by Stanford Law centers and a special discussion with the American Law Institute featuring Dean Jenny Martinez along with other law deans on how law schools are educating students and fostering community during the pandemic. 

Stanford Law faculty, students and colleagues are actively engaged in addressing the important legal and policy challenges that have emerged as cities, states and countries respond to the novel coronavirus. Coping with COVID: How Law Schools Are Educating Students and Fostering Community

The American Law Institute President David F. Levi was joined by six law school deans, including Stanford Law Dean Jenny Martinez, to discuss how their schools are adjusting to remote learning, including adapting experimental classes, clinics, and other hands-on courses to the online format. The deans also discussed how law schools are responding to the crisis by adjusting their admissions processes and re-allocating resources, all while maintaining a normal level of scholarly exchange and excitement.

A Conversation with SEC Chairman Jay Clayton and Professor Joe Grundfest

The Rock Center for Corporate Governance at Stanford University launched a series of online sessions addressing novel and difficult challenges posed by the ongoing COVID-19 crisis and other contemporary public policy issues implicating corporate America. The first in the series was a conversation with Jay Clayton, Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission and Stanford Professor Joe Grundfest. The discussion covered the implications of the current COVID-19 pandemic for the nation’s securities markets and focused on corporate disclosures, market function, financial reporting, and anti-fraud concerns.

Administering an Election During a Pandemic

In a discussion hosted by the Stanford Constitutional Law Center, voting-rights expert Nate Persily, James B. McClatchy Professor of Law at Stanford Law School, discussed the 2020 election and the ways the nation is preparing to vote in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Michael McConnell, Stanford Law Professor and Director of the Stanford Constitutional Law Center, led the discussion with Persily about what steps states should take in order for all voters in 2020 to remain safe.

The Stanford Center for Law & the Biosciences hosted their third installment of their lunch time talks, this time with the center’s very own Hank Greely, Deane F. and Kate Edelman Johnson Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Law and the Biosciences. During this discussion Greely talked about the prospect and viability of COVID immunity certificates.
