The Federal Graduate PLUS Loan and all private alternative loans are credit-based. Your credit report is used by lenders to determine whether or not to issue you loans. If you have had any credit problems (late payments, accounts in default, or bankruptcy) you may have difficulty securing the loans necessary to pay for your education. We advise students to request a copy of their credit report in advance of applying for Federal PLUS or private loans. The three major credit bureaus are listed below:
