Policy Labs and Directed Research Projects

Often students interested in participating in SCJC research opt to earn academic credit while collaborating with us on original scholarship. Credit can be earned through policy labs or directed research projects. In the past several years, SLS students have undertaken research under the leadership of SCJC faculty and staff focused on the implementation and effects of Public Safety Realignment, lifer parole, the demographics of California’s prosecutors offices, sentencing enhancements, the use of tasers by police departments, and other timely topics. In addition to writing academic papers, they have had the opportunity to present their findings to policymakers, including California Governor Jerry Brown, California Attorney General Kamala Harris, and others interested in the research.

During Spring 2016, Professor David Sklansky and Debbie Mukamal taught a policy lab regarding the investigation of police officer shootings.
