Steve is a lawyer, product leader, and data scientist focusing on the intersection of legal strategy, artificial intelligence, and user-centric system design to achieve legal innovation at scale.

Steve’s work focuses on the role of legal infrastructure and data science in shaping legal decision making, shaping ecosystem collaboration between outside counsel, in-house counsel, ALSPs and technology, as well as the impact of intellectual property on technical innovation.

Steve is currently Patent Counsel and the Head of Data Science, Technology, and Operations at Google Global Patents.  His team is pioneering the application of AI/ML to the legal domain and the bleeding edge of applied AI and data analytics to drive transformation to both the practice and business of law.  Prior to joining Google, Steve was a product leader and launched multiple products that are used by many Fortune 500 companies and numerous innovative technology companies today.

Steve is also a co-founder of ADAPT.legal, an industry-wide non-profit collective whose founding members include Microsoft, Amazon, Uber, Google, Cruise and Disney. ADAPT.legal aims to improve inclusive innovation and improve the pipeline of patent practitioners. Steve heads ADAPT.legal’s data and technology work and leads teams across multiple organizations to create ADAPT’s technical platform and analytics offering to tell the story of legal professionals and innovators while developing actionable insights.
