The Future Law Firm: Agentic AI and the Restructuring of Legal Services
A structural shift is underway in professional services: AI is moving from copilots (tools that augment professionals) to autopilots (AI systems that sell the work directly to the end client). In legal services, this implies that corporate legal departments will increasingly redirect budgets from traditional law firms toward tech-first operators, beginning with high-intelligence, routine tasks. This project tests that hypothesis empirically in Brazil—the world’s largest legal market (80M+ pending cases, 1.3M lawyers)—measuring whether agentic AI is accelerating the copilot-to-autopilot transition in legal services and restructuring the competitive dynamics between law firms, lawtechs, and the emerging hybrid category of law companies.
