Biography
Hwa-Yon Angela Lee is a judge of the Republic of Korea and a Research Fellow at the Judicial Policy Research Institute of the Supreme Court of Korea. Her work focuses on the institutional design of online courts and the principled integration of artificial intelligence into adjudicative processes. Situated at the intersection of judicial policy, digital justice, and legal informatics, her research explores how court systems can be re-architected through digital platforms while preserving procedural fairness, transparency, and judicial independence.
Drawing on comparative civil procedure and empirical research with judges, lawyers, and litigants, she develops frameworks for human-centered digital courts and responsible AI governance. She has represented the Korean judiciary at international forums, including the Hague Conference on Private International Law.
At CodeX, she advances research on the architecture of digital courts and governance models for AI-assisted adjudication, contributing to global discussions on the modernization of judicial institutions.
She previously served as a Visiting Scholar at Stanford Law School and earned her LL.M. there, and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Civil Law at Seoul National University.
