Safety Planning and Understanding Your Rights in the Event of Immigration Enforcement Activity

Here is information about how you can create a safety plan for yourself or a family member and information about how to exercise your rights in the event of immigration enforcement activity.

Safety Planning:

  1. Meet with your family to draft a family preparedness plan. Read the Immigrant Legal Resource Center’s Step-by-Step Family Preparedness Plan Resource Toolkit.
  2. Read the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants’ Safety Planning Guide.
  3. Read the Immigrant Defense Project’s Emergency Preparedness Resource.
  4. Read the Family Safety Guide for Immigrants.

Understanding and Exercising Your Rights:

  1. Learn what to do to protect yourself during an immigration enforcement action or if you have contact with the police, immigration agents, or the FBI by reading the National Immigration Law Center’s “What to Do if You Are Arrested or Detained by Immigration” Guide. 
  2. Always be prepared by carrying with you a copy of the Immigrant Legal Resource Center “Red Card.” These cards have Know Your Rights information that you can use during an enforcement action.
  3. Share Know Your Rights materials with friends and family. Please see the list below for Know Your Rights resources.

Hotline Numbers to Call to Report Immigration Enforcement in Your Community

Nonprofits and government entities in the Bay Area have partnered to provide free, confidential hotlines that you can call if you see ICE or immigration agents conducting enforcement in your community. Callers will be connected to a Rapid Response Network of advocates and attorneys who are on call to provide immediate assistance.
