The Gould Curriculum

Stanford Law students taking courses through the Gould Negotiation and Teaching program benefit from the experience of 11 senior practitioners and come away from their experience with a deep appreciation for the arts of negotiation, medication, and compromise.

I wanted to thank you for an amazing course. It was by far my favorite at Stanford so far and I feel that a lot of the key concepts are now etched in my memory and I’ll be able to put them to good use in years to come.

I went in thinking negotiation was straightforward. I was completely wrong: there’s a lot of theory to learn, and it takes a lot of practice to incorporate it into how you negotiate when you get in the room. It’s high reps, high reward.

Courses

Most of the Gould courses qualify for “experiential learning,” which the American Bar Association requires for law school graduation. Gould courses are taught by experienced practitioners from many different areas of the legal profession using a highly dynamic and interactive approach. We emphasize learning through a wide variety of simulations and cases capturing real world issues, including interpersonal (personal and professional), contract negotiation, cross-border conflict resolution, transactional deal making, settlement negotiations, and multiparty in local, regional and global contexts. We foster an environment in the classroom that is safe and inclusive for our students who come from many different backgrounds and cultures. Significant effort is made to provide individual feedback and highlight opportunities to increase skill and emotional intelligence in ways that are immediately relevant to personal and business interactions. In addition to the immensely popular standard negotiation class, we also offer advanced negotiation (transactions, public policy, environmental policy, international business, and international multi-party), mediation, facilitation, dispute resolution systems design, and alternative dispute resolution. We are dedicated to spreading our mission not only to the students in the law school, but also to the larger Stanford community (students, faculty and other employees) and throughout the Bay Area.

The curriculum includes the following courses, sorted by topic—Negotiation & Advanced Negotiation, Dispute Resolution, Dispute System Design, and Policy Labs. The listing includes course offerings for the current and previous academic years and starts with Autumn, Winter, then Spring.
