Rule of Law Roundtable
The Rule of Law Roundtable is a small annual gathering of leading faculty across a range of disciplines, including law, economics, and political science. The Roundtable seeks to build collaboration around key rule of law questions and support research and scholarship advancing our understanding of the rule of law in our time.
2026
The 2026 Rule of Law Roundtable explored a broad set of questions concerning the resilience of constitutional government, the operation of legal institutions under political stress, and the future of the rule of law in democratic and authoritarian contexts. Discussions drew on perspectives from constitutional law, political science, comparative law, and empirical legal studies, with presentations addressing topics such as constitutional failure, authoritarian populism, emergency powers, judicial governance and political prosecution. Contributors included Sam Issacharoff (New York University School of Law), Sai Prakash and Mila Versteeg (University of Virginia School of Law), Georg Vanberg (Duke University), José Ignacio Hernández (Boston College-American University), Carlos Bernal (Tulane School of Law), Katherine Mims Crocker (Texas A&M University School of Law), Leigha Crout (DePaul University College of Law), Elena Chachko and Katerina Linos (UC Berkeley School of Law), Nuno Garoupa (George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School), Andrea Pozas-Loyo (Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México), Clifford Carrubba (Emory University), Tom Clark (Stanford University), and Diego Zambrano and Nicola Tommasini (Stanford Law School). The Roundtable highlighted normative, doctrinal, and empirical approaches to the study of legal institutions and provided an opportunity for participants to exchange ideas on some of the most significant challenges confronting constitutional democracies around the world.
