Revitalizing the Rule of Law

Over the past decade, the rule of law has faced significant setbacks both in the United States and across the globe. Growing threats to democracy from authoritarian leaders and increasing social and economic inequality and unrest have contributed to a world in which the rule of law has eroded in many jurisdictions and is teetering on a knife’s edge in others, including here in the United States. There is an urgent need for all stakeholders, including the legal academy, to assess and address challenges to the rule of law in light of this era in which we find ourselves. But perhaps more importantly, we must consider how to build a future in which the rule of law is reinvigorated and revitalized to sustain democratic societies even stronger and more resilient than before.

The Neukom Center’s work to revitalize the rule of law seeks to envision and build the future for the rule of law in the United States and across the globe. In 2026, we joined with the Hoover Institution and the Stanford Constitutional Law Center on the Hoover Economic and Security Commons, leading the team of faculty working on the Justice, Rule of Law and Constitutional Order team. As part of this project, the Center will work closely with leading scholars focusing on needed reforms to strengthen the rule of law and constitutional order, including issues of executive power, the administration of justice, public corruption and accountability, and civil disorder.

The Rule of Law Roundtable is an annual invitation-only gathering of leading academics working in the fields of constitutional law, comparative law, rule of law, and democracy. Participants are invited to present current research for discussion and debate.
